Montessori Philosophy (Core)

Course Description:

Montessori Philosophy offers an overview of Dr. Montessori's principles and ideas as they relate to the child from birth to three.  We explore how Montessori viewed the child, and how she helped define a new importance to the child's place in society. We present and discuss how to nurture and assist the unfolding of the human personality using scientific analysis to help support the importance and relevance of this approach.  The course helps develop positive communication skills with an emphasis on the personal development of the Adult Learner by offering a deep understanding of Dr. Montessori’s philosophy of respect for all life and to support the development of independent thinking.


Pedagogy (Core)

Course Description:

Montessori Pedagogy is a course dedicated to the science and profession of being a Montessori Infant and Toddler guide. Adult Learners gain an understanding of the qualities that define the Infant and Toddler Montessori professional. Why is it that we do what we do in a Montessori environment and how do we interact with children and adults? Scientific analysis of how to nurture and assist the unfolding of the human personality is explained in terms of its implementation in the following areas: care of physical and psychological needs; daily routines as curriculum; strategies for assisting children; respectful interactions with children; and positive communication. Emphasis is placed on development assessment, awareness of special needs and delays, and the use of record keeping to enhance the understanding of each individual child.


Environmental Design (Core)

Course Description:

Dr. Montessori stated: “Adults admire their environment; they can remember it and think about it; but the child absorbs it.  The things he sees are not just remembered, they form a part of his soul." Based on that theory, we provide a basic understanding of the importance of the prepared environment and its effect on the development of the child.  This course offers fundamental skills in aesthetics and designing environments to meet the specific needs of the infant, toddler, staff, and how to help parents understand and incorporate Montessori environmental design at home.  The environments are designed to meet the needs of the child’s sensitive periods (language, movement, order, development of the senses. and independence, by providing activities, space, and specific furnishings.  In addition, aspects of design regulated by legislation are covered, including:  age grouping, numbers, ratios, and issues of safety.


Child, Family, and Community (Core)

Child, Family, and Community stresses the importance of the relationship of the infant and toddler program with the child's family.  Adult Learners are taught necessary skills of creating and developing mutual cooperation and support with the families.  The course assists the Adult Learner in developing dialogue skills and the connection between family and center in terms of stages of parenthood, child rearing practices, community resources, parent conference, parent involvement, parent education, and health and nutrition. (AMS requires a minimum of 15 hours.)


Observation (Foundational)

Academic Contact Hours:  27

Observation skills are crucial to the success of the guide in an infant and toddler environment. Adult Learners learn techniques of observation through actual observation in a functioning Montessori child care infant and toddler program. Skills for developmental assessment and techniques for record keeping are taught and practiced under staff supervision.  Throughout the course, Adult Learners have numerous opportunities to develop their own observation skills and practice. (AMS requires a minimum of 15 hours.)


Personal Growth and Development (Foundational)

Academic Contact Hours:  26

The development of the professional Montessori guide begins with the development of the self. Montessori qualities in terms of the adult are explored and discussed, as are standards of professionalism and ethical behavior. Adult Learners gain insight and understanding of how to nurture their own spiritual and intellectual development and begin a meaningful path toward their own  process of education for life. (AMS requires a minimum of 15 hours.)


Program Leadership and Administration (Foundational)

Academic Contact Hours: 17

This course provides strategies to manage an effective program based on historical Montessori foundations. An overview is given of administrative issues such as budgets, fees, funding, legislation, personnel, scheduling, and standards. In addition, we cover specific concerns of leadership including human needs and requirements for children, families, and staff, and provide Adult Learners with the skills for defining and developing their own leadership skills, whether working with a team in an environment, being a curriculum coordinator for a number of environments, or becoming a future school leader. (AMS requires a minimum of 15 hours.)


Human Development: Prenatal to 3 Years (Other)

Academic Contact Hours:  45

This course covers child development according to Dr. Maria Montessori, in addition to examining the perspectives of major contemporary theorists. Prenatal development and childbirth are examined, followed by the study of the young child's development in such areas as: cognitive, emotional, nutritional, neurological, psychological, fine and gross motor skills, physiological, physical, and social.  (AMS requires a minimum of 45 hours.)



Practicum Hours (minimum)    540 hours

The Practicum provides the Adult Learner with a supervised teaching/learning experience and a period of observation, internalization and further study to bring together the theory and practice of Montessori education in a Montessori environment. The environment is prepared with materials and activities that respond to the developmental and varied needs and interests of the specific age group from birth to age three. The Adult Learner receives a minimum of three on-site consultations for the CME|NY faculty to assist with support and provide feedback, as well as coaching and mentoring. (AMS requires a minimum of 540 hours.)


Documented Observations:

To fulfill the CME|NY Infant and Toddler requirements, Adults Learners must submit the following documented observation of children from birth to age three:

1 - Observations at the Montessori Children’s Center 

1 - High Risk Hospital Nursery (NICU)

1 - Montessori Toddler Program

1 - Non-Montessori Toddler program

1 - Montessori Early Childhood Program


For the additional location in Hanoi, Vietnam there are four observations:

1 - Montessori Toddler Program

1 - Montessori Toddler Program (a different group than the first)

1 - Non-Montessori Toddler Program

1 - Montessori Early Childhood Program


(AMS requires a minimum of four observations.)
